Gutters are needed but can be a real nuisance when you have trees growing around your house. They quickly fill up with leaves and pine needles, which will decay and start a biotope, serving perfect breeding grounds for weeds, flowers, even trees (!) - you name it!
The main purpose of a rain gutter is to protect a building's foundation by channeling water away from its base. We get torrential rainfalls in Tampa Bay and our gutters take a beating. They also help to prevent one from getting drenched when leaving the house. ;-)
Rain gutters can be made from a variety of materials such as cast iron, lead, zinc, galvanised steel, painted steel, copper, painted aluminium, PVC (and other plastics), concrete, stone, and wood.
Water collected by a rain gutter is fed, usually via a downspout or "downpipe" (traditionally called a leader or conductor), from the roof edge to the base of the building where it is either discharged into the ground or collected.
Full gutters lead to an overflow. But going up the ladder to fix this, isn't everyone's thing ;-)
What are the benefits of pressure washing gutters and downspouts?
1. Problems arising from clogged or damaged gutters in Tampa Bay homes Clogged gutters can cause water leakage into the house as the water backs up. Clogged gutters can also lead to stagnant water build up which allows mosquitos to breed and grasses and weeds to grow (in the gutter).
Gutters must be maintained regularly by removing leaves and other debris to keep them from clogging. Gutters that are filled with dirt can overflow and soak the foundation and damage the roof structure.
The amount of dirt that can accumulate in a rain gutter can be very extensive and eventually becomes really heavy weighing the gutter down. To prevent damage to your house or people, gutter cleaning needs to be done regularly, ideally twice a year. If you don't feel comfortable doing this job yourself, you can call us.
2. How to clean the gutters One-storey homes can be cleaned from standing on a ladder, with a shovel and a bucket. When cleaning the gutters of a 2-storey home it takes more guts. One either has to work from the roof or use a much taller ladder. If you are not afraid of heights, you can do this yourself, providing that you take reasonable precautions. Remember that roofs can be slippery when wet, especially here in Tampa Bay, when the shingles are covered with algae (a greenish/blackish film).
The downspout can be clogged, too, which is less easy to handle. One needs to run water down the spout to see if it backs up. If it does, it can sometimes be resolved by pushing enough water through, to unclogg it (using a pressure washer). However, this doesn't always handle the situation. At this point, dismantling the downspout to get to the point of obstruction is unavoidable, especially if the downspout is extending into the ground and not open at the bottom.
3. Pressure Washing as an affordable and quick solution to clean gutters If the gutter is full of debris, dirt and leaves one needs a shovel and a bucket to clean out any loose "stuff". This is also the first step that we do for residents in Tampa Bay. After that we use a special cleaning tool, that cleans the gutter with the proper pressure, leaving it sparkling clean.
Most of the time, everything is going smooth and the rain gutters and drainpipes are cleaned in a timely manner. Rarely, there is a blocked downspout that needs more attention and thus more time to fix.
If the gutters were neglected for a long time or the house is surrounded by trees, the amount of accumulated leaves can quickly become a constant problem and gutter and downspout cleaning an unavoidable task for Tampa Bay homeowners. When we clean roofs, we often clean the gutters around the house for free. It just makes sense. However, if you only need your gutters cleaned in the Tampa Bay area, we offer some great deals and also provide yearly cleaning packages.
